A4 and US Letter have different dimensions, so they fit different numbers of squares at the same spacing. These examples show how many full squares fit on each page.
Only full squares are drawn, with any extra space left around the edges. Changing the paper size or margins changes how many squares fit, not their size. Check the square count in the preview before downloading.
Your PDF is set up for the paper size you choose. Print at Actual size (100%) to keep 5 mm or 1/4 inch squares at their intended size.
The best line style depends on whether you plan to write over the grid or use it for measurements. Adjust the settings above and check the preview before saving your PDF.
Try light gray, fine lines and a larger square size. This keeps the grid visible without hiding your sketch.
Use darker lines if you need to count squares clearly. Choose a 5 mm or 1/4 inch grid as a starting point.
Choose darker guide lines every 5 or 10 squares. This makes it easier to follow bigger distances without changing the spacing of the small squares.
Use blank grid paper to plan a sketch, copy a pattern or practice working with proportions. Thin gray lines keep the squares visible without competing with pencil strokes, while darker lines every five squares can help you count larger distances.

In your PDF viewer or print dialog, choose Actual size or 100% instead of Fit to page. Check that the printer is using the same A4 or US Letter size selected in the maker. Measure ten 5 mm squares: together they should cover 50 mm.
Your printer may not support printing close to the paper edge. Increase Page margins to 15 or 20 mm, download the PDF again and print at Actual size. Avoid Fit to page, which changes the square spacing.
Choose Black or a darker line color, increase Line thickness, or use darker guide lines every five squares. Very fine 1 mm grids may be harder to see on some home printers.
